Wix Site

Jen's Wix Site

Compare and contrast between Web Expression and Wix

Well LOL, where should I start. I will never become a web designer. I suppose I will start with the html experience. After starting the third site I became extremely frustrated. I did teach myself that you should have all of the basic framework established and in working order before you start adding your content. I worked almost all day yesterday on my second site in Expression and it was an absolute disaster! None of my navigation worked , my default home page disappeared, why I have absolutely no idea. Probably the same reason my Images folder magically disappeared from the first site I attempted to do, no good reason. So I attempted to recreate it, I couldn't. So what I knew to do was to start over, again. The third time I made sure everything navigationally was correct before I added my content. This time it went good, not great, but it will be finished for the last class tonight. Hooray! This site is going to be a very generic looking site. I got the information on the pages that I needed to and all navigation is functionable as intended. For fear of things disappearing I did not want to mess too much in the code. At this point I just need to get it done.

I initially intended to use Weebly. I had looked into this earlier but once I started getting into it I made the decision to work in Wix. There were a lot more templates and it seemed easier. It was a lot less frustrating to do the site in Wix than Expression. Easier to place things where you wanted them, change things and alter things all from the wix site. This still took me a lot longer than I had anticipated and is not exactly what I had envisioned. There seemed to be so many more options to choose being a non web designer than a html specialist. I was able to start with my own navigation bar and not have to mess with changing and getting confused with the folder default pages. It was easier for me to make sure I was on the correct page I was editing than in Expression.

How are they different, Expession looks generic from the fear I placed on myself of not getting done on time and the fear of things disappearing and not working since I really did not know what I was doing. The Wix site has a nicer visual appeal to me, it is more colorful and creative, this is since I had less fear of the software and could get closer to the goals I had for the site.

I think Wix was more friendly for the non web designer user which lets you feel more comfortable and creative. Once you got to know your way around the options it was very easy to continue with your layout. Whereas with expression I could mess around for a lot longer period of time trying to get the result I wanted and just settling for what I got.

How did my final project differ from my storyboard.

My storyboard was slightly different than my final project, probably mostly from the home page. I  visualized a lot wider than I could deliver. I did not have the time to master some of the skills it would have taken for me to get the result I had in my mind. The content of the storyboard was the same but the layout turned out to be more of what I could just accomplish with what I knew how to do.

What have I learned in this class that will help me in the future.

Well at this point what I would really want to say is that I will find the money somewhere to have someone create the website I wish I could have, so it is the way I want it to look. But to be fair I will remove my frustrations and answer the question as professionally as I can.

There are many different things to take into consideration when you are creating a website. Not all things are just for the site. A lot of aspects have to do with the groundwork for the site but could be applied to printable marketing tools, flyers, post cards, business cards, etc. I made a new business announcement card while I was in this class through Vista print and while I was creating it I thought a lot about the C.R.A.P principles and I will say that it turned out great and I have had many comments on how nice it looks.

I can say that I never really sat and thought about all of the nuts and bolts of a website before this class, there is a lot more to it than what is seen on the screen. The html code is the skeleton of a site and from my experience in this class I have learned that it is not the easiest thing to work with. At least not in a 7 week course. I did learn about files, file size and how to save, how to manipulate a photo in Photoshop. I learned that it takes practice with these programs that it is not a instant learning from an hour lecture type of thing. I learned that if you can visualize an idea you probably can produce it but it will take some time to accomplish it to get the results that you want so you are satisfied.

So in a nut shell I have learned to be more observant and thoughtful of who is looking and how they are looking at any piece of marketing method you choose to use, it is not just a visual thing, there is a lot of technical to get the visual. This to me was frustrating at times, when I could not produce the visual I wanted due to my lack of technical knowledge.

Wix not Weebly, whatever!

I did not use Weebly , I wound up using Wix.
